Adama: I dare you to friend me.

Just kidding. Hi. I'm Reka. I seek as friends those who are diverse, creative, artistic, deep, fun, crazy, open-minded, principled, irreverent, unedited, decent, curious, passionate, fannish, steadfast, generous, kind, intelligent, articulate, and quirky. I like friends who are engaged in life and who enjoy discussing things on both a superficial and deep level. If you want to friend me, please comment here OR send me a PM to introduce yourself, unless we've met elsewhere. I think of my journal as a community, a safe place for diverse persons to ask and answer questions, discuss topics, share thoughts, offer theories, explore ideas, celebrate fandoms, vent, encourage each other, engage in fandom chatter, and discover more about the self and others. Nothing pleases me more than when the friends I’ve made interact, not only with me, but with each other. Please feel free to discuss, discuss, discuss amongst yourselves, as well as to engage in conversation with me. You can expect to find posts on topics including: Television, film, art, writing, actors, books, music, food, philosophy, poetry, physics, the artistic process, nature, dogs, humanity, ideas, relationships, truth, beauty, redemption, loss, life, death & dying, fiction, sexuality, beliefs, desire, language, words, and biology.

Title: There is Nothing New Under the Sun
Part One
Rating: So far, PG-13
Genre: Angst, at present, but keep reading, because I promised Chrissy a hopeful ending and some smut
Betas: [info]0penhearts and [info]athousandsmiles
Author Notes: A future fic set after Teamwork, this story finds Cameron working at a Hospice in Chicago. Written as a Secret Santa fic for [info]fated_addiction, who requested:

Three things I want:
1. Snowstorms.
2. A plane ticket.
3. And since it's the holidays and after tonight I can't take anymore heartbreak, a happy/hopeful ending.

Three things I don't want:
1. I'm okay with any canon, but stick with canon stuff, no OOC.
2. No Christmas songs.
3. No character bashing.

I'm trying to identify a song used on episode eight, season one of Grey's Anatomy. It's the song that starts playing as psychic patient Mr. Duff has a vision that Cristina is with child, and Cristina scurries out of his room, asking Bailey if she can "switch" patients. The song doesn't seem to be listed on the websites devoted to the show's music, but here are the lyrics. Please let me know if you can identify the song and musician.

Think
Set yourself a place
I wonder if you`ll ever recognize
The smile upon my face
See you everyday
Watch you cross the street
Whenever you see me come your way

Tried to make a conversation
But never said a word
I`m tired of making compromises
Gotta make my feelings heard, so I`m telling you

Think-that you can get rid of me
And you think that your life is a mistery
Well I know that you think you`ll break free
But my friend I`ll bring you misery

And you try to run and hide
But we both know until you come to me
I won`t be satisfied
Wearing your disguise
But I can tell what you`ve been thinking
Just by looking in your eyes

Found my name and number
But I never said a word
I`m tired of being silent so
I gotta make my feelings heard, so I`m telling you...

House/Cameron Romance
Title: Closeted

Cameron reaches far back into the deep closet, her fingers slipping over fabrics, woolly and silky, until she touches plastic. Pushing hangers with dresses, jumpers, and puffy-sleeved blouses to the side, she pulls out the red dress, dry-cleaned and still encased in its protective sheath. With it clutched in her arms, she sits on the edge of the bed, remembering the warmth of his hands as they touched her waist through the thin silk.

Before the poker game began, before House and Wilson bought their drinks and anted up, before Chase chatted up the nurses in their evening attire, there was the darkness of a half-moon night and the glow of a cigar and the silhouette of a man leaning against the building where the hospital benefit was held.

She forfeited the entryway and walked toward him as if choice was a word from a forgotten language, the soft red dress swishing against her thighs.

House squinted at her in the pale light and then his eyes widened, taking her in. "Let me guess. Someone's artery blew like a fire hydrant and you didn't have time to clean up the mess. Turn around," he ordered.

Slowly she pivoted, feeling like a private dancer who wore a private smile.

"Thank you. For the dress," she said when once again she faced him, finding herself closer to the lapels of his tux. She knew he'd deny any knowledge of the gown that had appeared in her locker at the hospital that morning, a day after he'd remarked once again that she resembled an adolescent boy. "It's a little more modern than that corsage."

He stepped closer and clamped a hand over her forehead. "No fever. And yet you're delusional." As he lowered his hand, she leaned up on tiptoe and linked her arms around his neck and, before he could pull away or protest, she touched her lips to his mouth. For a moment, they stayed like that, and then he leaned into her and slowly kissed her, as his arms circled her waist.

Cameron, standing in her pretty slip, steps into the dress and calls his name.

He limps into the bedroom, his fingers skimming the silky skin of her back as they locate the zip. And simultaneously they say:

"It still fits."

My friend Carla is a writer who, in addition to penning short stories, teaches writing courses at my alma mater. She has asked me to come and give a lecture on the topic of Fan Fiction for her college students. I'm looking for your thoughts, opinions, and comments regarding the FF genre of writing.

Do you consider Fan Fiction a type of literature? What -- besides the obvious fact that FF is based on characters that already exist -- differentiates FF from other forms of fiction writing? For those of you who also write original fiction, how do you regard FF? Is it a valuable use of your skills as writers or does it distract you from novels/short story manuscripts and so on?

What do you think of the comments you get at LJ versus comments at FF.net? What do you hope to achieve from writing FF and publishing it online?

All feedback on the topic is welcomed.

Feeling bad never felt this good.

Skin pulls away from skin in the wake of the blade, a sweet sensation. A fissure forms. Bloods flows. Blistered lip from biting at it: That’s him.

A dust mote floats through the air as his eyes track its flight. Needles and pins, needles and pins, each thought pricks him. Hallucinations can be redemptive.

He shakes as he pinches the razor between fingers and thumb and lowers it with precision, slicing through a freckle on his arm. Leaning back against the leather couch, he closes his eyes and listens to “Trouble in Mind.”

If it were up to me, I'd put individuals who have Down Syndrome on the covers of all the best magazines. They would be the featured guests on talk shows and serve as advisers to President Obama. They'd appear in comic sketches like John Oliver on The Daily Show and, on Gossip Girl, they'd play leading roles and have hot love interests. That's what I'd do.

Below, John C. McGinley, and his son, Max.

According to Time magazine, House is "now the world's most popular TV show." So I guess that means the circus continues?

In other news: Today I discovered that I've been misusing the word "pith." It's one of my favorite words. But it means the complete opposite of what I thought it meant. On the upside, looking up "pith" and "pithy" led me to the word "cogent," which led me to the word "cogitate."

Right now I am cogitating upon the phenomenon that is Life, and also thinking about how terrific Matthew Fox's acting was in the pilot of Lost. I love watching the first 15 minutes of Part I, watching how the character of Jack as hero is established from the get-go. I love his first scene with Kate. The way their roles are shaped from the beginning. Has Matthew ever received a Golden Globe for the role?

On the downside, I need an antonym for "pith," something besides "insignificant." A neat, short, Germanic word that is as cool as "pith," but means what pith does not mean. This reminds me of the hours I spent trying to come up with the male equivalent of "bimbo."

Have you ever found that you've been misusing a word for years? Examples?

And in the "what did you do today?" category, I gave my husband his birthday gifts, for it is his birthday. We listened to The Kinks this morning for a long time and our conversation, could you see it, looked like a map of the London tube. We planned to go out for Indian tonight, but have decided to stay home and eat Jack's Frozen Pizzas and Dove ice cream bars and sit on our new brown leather sofa.

Come do the meme I posted yesterday if you're bored. It's kind of long, so skip questions if you want. I'm all for breaking the rules. I'll post my answers soon.

Has anyone read Sharp Objects or Dark Places by Gillian Flynn? If so, what are your thoughts?

How about the short stories of Denis Johnson? I was just thinking about a rather disturbing story he wrote called Car Crash While Hitchhiking. It was assigned reading in my graduate fiction writing workshop.

My friend/co-worker and I have been discussing the short story. If you don't read short stories for a long time and then pick up a collection, it's unsettling, the way it is if you are hiking and find yourself about to walk off the edge of a cliff.

What are your summer reading recommendations? Fiction? Nonfiction? Memoirs? Poetry? Lit mags? Anything goes.

I like to take photographs using only natural light sources, to see what I can get away with when taking pictures in the dark. Light sources? Moonlight. The night sky. OK, a little light from a street lamp down the block from us.

This may be too dark to see. It's a pair of red tulips.

A pair of pears. My friend Carol made these ceramic pears. I bought them for my mom's birthday, only now I want to keep the pears. I love the shape of a pear. Or two.

Pears. A Japanese wedding chest in the background, I think.

Shooting straight up at the blooms on what I believe to be a Crabapple tree in our backyard.

Shot from our deck. It's perhaps 9 p.m. and rain clouds are blowing in. The treetop is in our neighbor -- Myrtles's -- backyard. Myrtle is nearing 90 and loves both versions of the movie, Sabrina. Me, too.

The Kalamazoo River. More rain clouds. Taken last fall, I think?

The docks. Saugatuck. Fall.

Can't recall if I ever posted this. My husband, reading. In the background? Lake Michigan. Good Harbor Bay. The Leelanau Peninsula. We have a little place there.
